Facepunch Studios introduces rentable apartments and shops in Rust's latest update, complete with daily scrap payments, eviction risks, and a master key system.

Facepunch Studios has released the 'Common Ground' update for Rust, introducing a new monument: the Apartment Complex. Players can now rent rooms of various tiers, from basement starter flats to penthouses, each offering different amenities like stoves, beds, and workbenches. To secure a room, players must pay a deposit of scrap and continue feeding scrap into an intercom every 24 hours. Miss a payment, and they will be evicted with all possessions seized.
Security is not guaranteed even for paying tenants. A master key is hidden somewhere on the island; players who find it can unlock any occupied room for five minutes. This opens the door for burglaries, as the keyholder can access others' apartments and loot their belongings.

The update also adds rentable shop stalls in the complex's market. Players can set up shops by paying a non-refundable upfront scrap fee plus a per-hour (real-time) scrap cost. At least 12 hours of rent must be paid upfront. After a shop has been open for six hours, other players can take it over by paying double the upfront and hourly costs, with the multiplier escalating (3x, 4x, etc.) each time the shop is taken over. If rent runs out, the shop and cost multiplier reset.
Beyond the apartment and shop systems, the Common Ground update includes a new clan system and clan table, as well as quality-of-life improvements. In Softcore mode, resource gathering is boosted and raids are limited to a 6 PM to 9 PM window. These additions aim to provide more structured player interactions and alternative progression paths in the survival game.
